Jungkook, Jimin, V, RM, J-Hope, Suga, Jin. These boys are part of BTS, also known as Bangtan Sonyeondan or Beyond the Scenes. They are a South Korean boy band that specialize in Hip-Hop, R&B, and contemporary pop music formed by BigHit Entertainment Company. In the group, Jungkook plays the role of the main vocalist, part of the dance line, and being the Golden Makne, Jimin as the lead vocalist and part of the dance line, V as the vocalist, visual, and part of the dance line, Jin as the vocalist and main visual, RM as a rapper and leader, Suga as the lead rapper, and J-Hope as the rapper, dance choreographer, and main dance. They debuted on June 12, 2013, performing their first song called “NO” and received several New Artist of the Year awards for their track “No More Dream.” The awards were given to them in 2013 at the Melon Music Awards, Golden Disc Awards, and at the 2014 Seoul Music Awards. The group continued to get more prominence and fans with their albums Dark & Wild(2014), The Most Beautiful Moment in Life(2015) Pt.2, The Most Beautiful in Life: Young Forever(2016) which they went on to win the Album of the Year in the Melon Music Awards, and finally entering the U.S. Billboard 200.

In 2016 their second full album, Wings, peaked #26 on Billboard 200, which set the highest record chart ranking for a K-Pop album ever in the U.S history. The album sold above 1.5 million copies which became BTS’s first best-seller and after finding their way onto winning Artist of the Year at the 2016 Mnet Music Asian Award. Then in 2017, the group’s album Love Yourself: Her, went straight onto #7 on the Billboard 200 which is the highest rank ever received for an Asian Artist in history! They then headed on to debut on Billboard Hot 100 for their album, DNA which was entered as #85 and made it to #67. There next track, “Mic Drop,” which featured Steve Aoki as the DJ and Desiigner reached #28 on the Billboard Hot 100. The tracks are certified gold by Recording Industry Association of America, a first in history for any Korean Act ever. The album marketed over 1.2 million copies on South Korea’s Gaon Album Chart in the first month after debuting, reclaiming its title as the best-selling album in the chart’s history and becoming the biggest selling Korean album by month in past sixteen years. BTS was awarded Mnet Asian Award for Artist of the Year in 2017 for the second year in a row. Then, in 2018, Love Yourself: Tear was debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 making the only K-Pop group in the world to accomplish this exploit so far. The track was named “Fake Love,” which became the boys’ third time to reach Gold certification. It sold over 1.9 million track copies on Gaon Album Chart on August 2018, while once again breaking the chart’s all-time monthly record. The tracks that have so far been sold worldwide are estimated to be about 9 million albums since their appearance as idols on stage.

BTS is also widely known for their media presence. On March 2016, they were listed by Forbes, an American magazine business, as the most retweeted artists on Twitter. In the same year, Twitter also launched there first K-Pop emoji which featured BTS’s logo. On October, BTS once again placed #1 on their Social 50 chart, making them the first Korean artists to top the chart. On May 2017, they received Top Social Artist Award at the Billboard Music Awards, becoming the first Korean group to win a BBMA. On June 2017, Time magazine labeled the band one of the most influential people on the internet. Forbes Korea Power Celebrity list ranked BTS #1 as South Korea’s most powerful and influential celebrities and also becoming one of the youngest receivers ever to be awarded the Order of Cultural Merit from the South Korean government. Then in September, BTS gave a speech in the United Nations as ambassadors for UNICEF and shortly after featured on the cover of Time magazine as ‘Next Generation Leaders’.

As well as being known for their amazing vocals and rapping skills, they are also recognized for endorsing products too. In 2015, they became representatives for Puma, casual athletic footwear which is the third largest sportswear manufacturer company in the world. In 2016, Nexon, an international South Korean game company, released Elsword, an RPG game which based characters off of the members in the band. That year, the members topped the ‘Boy Group Power Ranking’ issued by the Korean Corporate Reputation Research Institute for 9 out of the 12 months and were the boy group with the greatest brand reputation. In 2017, BTS was chosen as honorary tourism representatives for Seoul as part of the program called ‘I Seoul U.’ The group filmed an advertisement created by the Seoul Metropolitan Government, which aired in over 200 countries with the promotional song “With Seoul” on December 6 and the music video for the song on December 13. The boys were also chosen as brand models for Lotte Duty-Free Shop, which is a subscription service on YouTube. Later on that year, they collaborated with Line Friends and called their characters BT21. The characters were produced based on the members’ character traits and habits which were created by the boys themselves. The BT21 characters serve as emojis, stickers, clothing, and more.

Since BTS’s first debut in 2013 and today, they have grown so much as artists, vocalists, and even as businessmen. They are responsible for breaking various world records, topping charts in the U.S. and in South Korean history for best-selling albums. BTS has received many commendable honorary awards over the years, and high recognition by people all over the world. We all can’t wait until they make their next move that will surely shock the world once again!
